TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders are a family of problems that relate to the joint and muscles of the lower jaw. If you suffer from a TMJ disorder, you may experience chronic pain and locking episodes when opening or closing and joint noise.

Screening Process

Most patients do not require surgical intervention for their TMJ symptoms and may improve with conservative, nonsurgical therapies. We recommend seeking non-surgical treatment modalities and seek consultation with an oral-facial pain specialist who specializes in TMD management. If surgery is deemed appropriate, then we will require a referral from them for treatment.

If you are a candidate for surgical therapy, then some of the treatment options we offer include:

  • Trigger point injections with steroids
  • BOTOX® injections for clenching and grinding
  • TMJ arthrocentesis
  • TMJ prosthetic joint replacement

TMJ Prosthetic Replacement

Treatment planning for TMJ prosthetic replacement involves the removal of the joint and re-establishment of the patient’s bite. Sometimes, orthognathic surgery needs to be performed as well to make everything fit perfectly. This technology allows us to plan the case in a virtual environment with increased accuracy and efficiency and create a completely customized prosthesis for the patient.
