Wisdom Tooth Removal in Rancho Cucamonga

Wisdom teeth or third molars are the last teeth to come into the mouth. They are in development from ages 12-15 years of age in your jaw bone and emerge in your mouth from ages 17-25 years of age. Most individuals have 4 wisdom teeth, but some have less. When a tooth doesn’t fully emerge properly and is stuck under the gums or bone, then it is called “impacted.” This often occurs when there isn’t enough room to accomodate them. At least 90% of people have at least 1 impacted wisdom tooth.

Why Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Wisdom Teeth Presentation

To provide you with a better understanding of wisdom teeth, we have provided the following multimedia presentation. Many common questions pertaining to wisdom teeth are discussed.

Wisdom Teeth Presentation

An impacted wisdom tooth can problems and should be removed if the have:

  • cavities
  • gum (periodontal) disease
  • infections
  • pathologies such as cysts or tumors
  • cause damage to neighboring teeth.

When is the best time to remove wisdom teeth?

An appropriate consultation and exam will help determine if the wisdom teeth are problematic or potentially can cause problems in the future. Often, it is better to remove them while they are still developing because there is less potential risk of nerve injury, they are easier to remove and recovery is easier when patients are younger.

Risks

Like any surgery, there are inherent risks to wisdom teeth surgery. Expected problems that occur include pain, bleeding and swelling. We offer medications and strategies to minimize this. Unexpected problems can also occur, and these include:

  • Dry socket: problem in healing that causes extreme pain around day 4-5 after surgery. Usually occurs with lower wisdom teeth and risk factors include smoking and birth control pills.
  • Infection: very uncommon in young, healthy individuals. We prescribe antibiotics pills or mouthwash to avoid this
  • Nerve injury: There are 2 sensory nerves that near the lower wisdom teeth. With our 3D imaging, we are able to predict who is at higher risk for nerve problems and can offer alternative methods of treatment.

Anesthesia Considerations

Removing wisdom teeth is not a pleasant experience. Oral & maxillofacial surgeons are trained in delivering IV sedation/anesthesia and we can put you to sleep for this procedure.

The worst thing to do is IGNORE your wisdom teeth!

Everything was simple and quick - from the consultation to the actual procedure. The staff and doctor were very professional, friendly, and efficient. The procedure went very well and the recovery care (phone call, post procedure supplies, etc...) was great. Overall great experience.

The staff is absolutely on top of EVERYTHING and personally, I love that. I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for oral surgery work to be done. I got my wisdom teeth out and was scared, but the every single staff member was easy to talk to and was very comforting and informative with all questions asked, no matter who I asked. Dr. Zakhary did a phenomenal job, was thorough in his explanation of what was needed to be done during the consultation, he didn't just state the obvious or talk over the me, and allowed for any questions or concerns at the end of the visit. My actual surgery day was a breeze, and the staff was yet again, on top of it. With no doubt, you should get work done here, if you really care about the treatment you receive all around, from the staff to the actual procedure. They offered a smoothie for after my surgery and handed me many post-op papers to help guide me through my healing process and also made sure I had the right tools necessary to recover swiftly and quickly, such as offering cold/warm compacts to wrap around my face and a syringe for cleaning. Thank you AGAIN to the office staff for making my visits welcoming.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this office! Both my boys have autism so any kind of procedure is scary. They immediately put us at ease, and the boys were very comfortable there. Dr Choi is amazing and his office staff is equally wonderful, patient, compassionate, and helpful. Thank you so much!

Honestly, I was so anxious because of word of mouth horror stories about wisdom teeth but I had such a stellar experience. I am amazed at how easy and painless the process was. I did not go under and requested local anesthetic and it was a breeze. Dr. D was phenomenal and god help me, but I want to say her name was Rebecca- superb. An all around comfortable experience and if I had to do it again, this is where I’d go. Shout out to Dr. Seccombe referring me here. Amazing experience.
