Wisdom Tooth Removal in Rancho Cucamonga

Wisdom teeth or third molars are the last teeth to come into the mouth. They are in development from ages 12-15 years of age in your jaw bone and emerge in your mouth from ages 17-25 years of age. Most individuals have 4 wisdom teeth, but some have less. When a tooth doesn’t fully emerge properly and is stuck under the gums or bone, then it is called “impacted.” This often occurs when there isn’t enough room to accomodate them. At least 90% of people have at least 1 impacted wisdom tooth.

Why Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Wisdom Teeth Presentation

To provide you with a better understanding of wisdom teeth, we have provided the following multimedia presentation. Many common questions pertaining to wisdom teeth are discussed.

Wisdom Teeth Presentation

An impacted wisdom tooth can problems and should be removed if the have:

  • cavities
  • gum (periodontal) disease
  • infections
  • pathologies such as cysts or tumors
  • cause damage to neighboring teeth.

When is the best time to remove wisdom teeth?

An appropriate consultation and exam will help determine if the wisdom teeth are problematic or potentially can cause problems in the future. Often, it is better to remove them while they are still developing because there is less potential risk of nerve injury, they are easier to remove and recovery is easier when patients are younger.

Risks

Like any surgery, there are inherent risks to wisdom teeth surgery. Expected problems that occur include pain, bleeding and swelling. We offer medications and strategies to minimize this. Unexpected problems can also occur, and these include:

  • Dry socket: problem in healing that causes extreme pain around day 4-5 after surgery. Usually occurs with lower wisdom teeth and risk factors include smoking and birth control pills.
  • Infection: very uncommon in young, healthy individuals. We prescribe antibiotics pills or mouthwash to avoid this
  • Nerve injury: There are 2 sensory nerves that near the lower wisdom teeth. With our 3D imaging, we are able to predict who is at higher risk for nerve problems and can offer alternative methods of treatment.

Anesthesia Considerations

Removing wisdom teeth is not a pleasant experience. Oral & maxillofacial surgeons are trained in delivering IV sedation/anesthesia and we can put you to sleep for this procedure.

The worst thing to do is IGNORE your wisdom teeth!

I had a Wonderful experience and an Exceptional patient care at this Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon’s office in Rancho Cucamonga! Everyone was very professional and super nice and treated me so kindly. The front office took care of my referral and explained the treatment cost and my copay. All the nurses gave me the VIP care and were so professional. They made me feel at ease from the start of the procedure all the way to recovery. I received clear discharge instructions and a complimentary grande smoothie of my choice to go home with. What a service! My WOW factor was the Amazing outcome of my surgery which Dr. Christopher Choi performed. He thoroughly explained the procedure, answered my questions and put my mind at ease that I was going to be just fine. And I sure was! The twilight sedation was wonderful! I had no pain afterwards, very little bleeding and the swelling went down in just three hours! The incision site from my wisdom tooth extraction is healing so very well on my second day after surgery, and only so very slight discomfort. Amazing! I will definitely recommend Dr. Choi and this office to all who may need the service they provide because it’s just Outstanding! Thank you to All so very much!

My daughter was so scared she stared crying before they called her name and one of the nurse came to comfort her and took her back. I (mom) was able to go in the room with her before she able to put to sleep. They were letting her know everything they were doing before they did it so there was no surprises. Plus they had music in the room a blanket and ended with music to make the experience memorable 🙂
