Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth or third molars are the last teeth to come into the mouth. They are in development from ages 12-15 years of age in your jaw bone and emerge in your mouth from ages 17-25 years of age. Most individuals have 4 wisdom teeth, but some have less. When a tooth doesn’t fully emerge properly and is stuck under the gums or bone, then it is called “impacted.” This often occurs when there isn’t enough room to accomodate them. At least 90% of people have at least 1 impacted wisdom tooth.

Why Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

An impacted wisdom tooth can problems and should be removed if the have:

  • cavities
  • gum (periodontal) disease
  • infections
  • pathologies such as cysts or tumors
  • cause damage to neighboring teeth.

An appropriate consultation and exam will help determine if the wisdom teeth are problematic or potentially can cause problems in the future. Often, it is better to remove them while they are still developing because there is less potential risk of nerve injury, they are easier to remove and recovery is easier when patients are younger.

What Are the Possible Risks & Complications?

Like any surgery, there are inherent risks to wisdom teeth surgery. Expected problems that occur include pain, bleeding and swelling. We offer medications and strategies to minimize this. Unexpected problems can also occur, and these include:

  • Dry socket: problem in healing that causes extreme pain around day 4-5 after surgery. Usually occurs with lower wisdom teeth and risk factors include smoking and birth control pills.
  • Infection: very uncommon in young, healthy individuals. We prescribe antibiotics pills or mouthwash to avoid this
  • Nerve injury: There are 2 sensory nerves that near the lower wisdom teeth. With our 3D imaging, we are able to predict who is at higher risk for nerve problems and can offer alternative methods of treatment.

Dr. Paxman and the staff were very kind and professional. My wisdom teeth extraction went by like a breeze — I felt so comfortable going into and coming back out of it that I was like, "Hey, that was great. Let's do that again!" In the recovery area, one of the nurses and I went over what the recovery process was like and answered any questions I may have had. They provided me with a tropical smoothie, a take-home kit that proved very useful, and a set of clear instructions that left me feeling confident in my recovery. The next day, they even called to check in on how I was doing. Any discomfort or inflammation I felt over the next several days was minimal and easy to manage. Overall, I felt incredibly well taken care of throughout my first surgical experience. Thanks Janice, Tabitha, Lauren, and Dr. Paxman!

Without a doubt the best experience I have ever had! I was freaking out about my wisdom teeth removal and hoping by some miracle they would call to cancel but sadly they actually called me to see if I could come in earlier. The moment I walked in for my appointment they put me at ease, Joanna, Crystal and Luz were a dream team to have. Dr. Choi did an amazing job I’m not sure what kind of magic these people are using but since I’ve left I have not had to use any pain medication at all, the bleeding stop about an hour after I got out of there and the best part about a little to no sweeping at all. Amazing and kind staff, great experience.
