Wisdom Tooth Removal in Rancho Cucamonga

Wisdom teeth or third molars are the last teeth to come into the mouth. They are in development from ages 12-15 years of age in your jaw bone and emerge in your mouth from ages 17-25 years of age. Most individuals have 4 wisdom teeth, but some have less. When a tooth doesn’t fully emerge properly and is stuck under the gums or bone, then it is called “impacted.” This often occurs when there isn’t enough room to accomodate them. At least 90% of people have at least 1 impacted wisdom tooth.

Why Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Wisdom Teeth Presentation

To provide you with a better understanding of wisdom teeth, we have provided the following multimedia presentation. Many common questions pertaining to wisdom teeth are discussed.

Wisdom Teeth Presentation

An impacted wisdom tooth can problems and should be removed if the have:

  • cavities
  • gum (periodontal) disease
  • infections
  • pathologies such as cysts or tumors
  • cause damage to neighboring teeth.

When is the best time to remove wisdom teeth?

An appropriate consultation and exam will help determine if the wisdom teeth are problematic or potentially can cause problems in the future. Often, it is better to remove them while they are still developing because there is less potential risk of nerve injury, they are easier to remove and recovery is easier when patients are younger.

Risks

Like any surgery, there are inherent risks to wisdom teeth surgery. Expected problems that occur include pain, bleeding and swelling. We offer medications and strategies to minimize this. Unexpected problems can also occur, and these include:

  • Dry socket: problem in healing that causes extreme pain around day 4-5 after surgery. Usually occurs with lower wisdom teeth and risk factors include smoking and birth control pills.
  • Infection: very uncommon in young, healthy individuals. We prescribe antibiotics pills or mouthwash to avoid this
  • Nerve injury: There are 2 sensory nerves that near the lower wisdom teeth. With our 3D imaging, we are able to predict who is at higher risk for nerve problems and can offer alternative methods of treatment.

Anesthesia Considerations

Removing wisdom teeth is not a pleasant experience. Oral & maxillofacial surgeons are trained in delivering IV sedation/anesthesia and we can put you to sleep for this procedure.

The worst thing to do is IGNORE your wisdom teeth!

I had a great experience with all the staff. They made me feel very comfortable and cared for. Everyone was funny, friendly, and extremely accommodating! They got me a consultation and a surgery appointment the next day! I enjoyed my overall experience... as much as one can enjoy 4 wisdom teeth being extracted! Haha.

We came to Dr. Choi and his team for the removal of my daughter’s wisdom teeth. The office runs smoothly and efficiently. The appointments were on time as scheduled. The waiting room is a pleasant place to wait while your child is getting their procedure done. The after care instructions were very clear and detailed, and they provided a nice ice pack and smoothie for my daughter afterwards. I highly recommend this practice and will definitely bring my other kids back here when it is their turn!
