Supernumary Teeth / Mesiodens

“A mesiodens, also known as a supernumary tooth, is an extra tooth located in the middle of the upper jaw behind the incisors.”

A mesiodens, also known as a supernumary tooth, is an extra tooth located in the middle of the upper jaw behind the incisors. It is most often found on routine x-rays and is usually asymptomatic. Sometimes the extra tooth will erupt like a normal tooth, but it should be monitored closely. If the tooth does not erupt and is left untreated, this extra tooth can lead to crowding of the teeth or even prevent the eruption of the permanent teeth. Typically, the tooth is removed between the ages of 6 and 8 if asymptomatic. Removal of the tooth is usually done while the patient is asleep through a small incision on the top of the mouth. Stitches are typically used to hold the gums in place during the healing process. Once the tooth is removed, the permanent teeth will erupt in their normal pattern.

Ankylosed Primary Teeth

Impacted teeth are usually found in the permanent dentition. Very rarely is a primary tooth impacted. The most common primary tooth to be impacted is the primary second molar. Primary teeth become impacted for various reasons which include: trauma to the tooth bud or by a mechanical obstruction. In either case, it is very important to closely follow the eruption of the primary tooth. If the primary tooth remains impacted, it may cause a delay in the eruption of the permanent tooth. Typically, if the primary tooth is impacted, the tooth is removed while the patient is asleep, and a space maintainer is used to prevent movement of the adjacent teeth and allow room for the permanent tooth to erupt.

Anesthesia

When it comes to kids, our priority is to make a safe and comfortable environment for them during there visit with us. We employ a combination of liquid sedatives, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and IV medications to ensure the child is unaware during the procedure and has a good experience. The surgeons and surgical assistants are all life-support certified and vital signs are monitored throughout the sedation.

My son had 2 teeth pulled and I couldn't have picked a better office to go to. They were amazing with my son and took into consideration all the issues he had. They made him and us feel so comfortable, I knew he would be in great hands! If we need any work done in the future, there is no doubt we will be back. Thank you Dr. Dudziak and all the girls that took such great care of our son!!

Dr. Choi and his staff were awesome! We brought our young son in to have his wisdom teeth extracted along with two other baby teeth. As expected our son was very nervous and not happy about having to have his teeth removed. After our initial consultation our son let us know that he really felt comfortable with Dr. Choi and appreciated him asking about his favorite sport, baseball. However being able to choose what flavor smoothie he would get after his procedure was the icing on the cake for him. Thank you for making our son feel comfortable and cared for.

Awesome office, staff, and fantastic doctor. I was very nervous having my 12 year old put under anesthesia, but the doctor explained everything to me and eased my fears. Dr. Choi is also an MD and does a lot of work with children. These facts really made me feel like this was the right place to go. My daughter had no problems whatsoever and today, day 3 since the procedure, she is off with friends shopping! Definitely choose Dr. Choi for your kids!

I was referred to Inland Empire Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons regarding a consult for my 7 year old that needed a tooth extracted. From the moment I walked into the office the front staff were very friendly and helpful. The consult went very well and my child seemed at ease with the idea of getting a tooth taken out. This can only be attributed to the friendliness of the staff and their ability to go above and beyond to make my child feel comfortable. The day of the procedure, the staff was amazing. They greeted my child with high fives, again putting him at ease. Dr. Choi did a wonderful job comforting us as parents. He reassured us that our child was in good hands and the procedure was very simple, which is something all parents like to hear. We were immediately notified once the procedure was complete, given a verbal report on how the procedure went and allowed to be with our child as soon as he was in the recovery area. Dr. Choi meet with us in the recovery area to answer any questions and the assistant was more than helpful in answering all post procedure care questions. I would recommend this office to anyone who requires a procedure, especially one involving a child.
